WPForms not sending email? How to fix WPForms notifications

WPForms shows the confirmation message but the notification never arrives. Check the notification settings, the From address and how WordPress sends mail, in that order.

Someone submits your WPForms form, sees your confirmation message, and you never get the notification. WPForms itself almost always works. What fails is either a notification setting, or WordPress’s ability to deliver the email afterwards. This guide checks both, in the order that finds the problem fastest.

For causes that apply to every form plugin, see Contact form not sending email? Why it happens and how to fix it.

1. Check the form’s notification settings

Open the form in the WPForms builder and go to Settings → Notifications.

  • Enable Notifications must be switched on.
  • Send To Email Address defaults to {admin_email}, the site’s administration email. If nobody reads that inbox, enter the address you actually check.
  • If you use several notifications or conditional logic, confirm the conditions are met for the submissions you are missing.
  • If a smart tag such as a field value is used as the recipient, make sure that field is filled in and still exists.

2. Fix the From Email and Reply-To

In the same notification, set From Email to an address on your own domain, for example [email protected]. Never use the visitor’s email field as the From Email. Put the visitor’s Email field in Reply-To instead, so pressing Reply still reaches them. WPForms shows a warning when the From Email does not match your site’s domain; take it seriously. The reason is explained in why your form must not send from the visitor’s email.

3. Check whether the submission was saved

In WPForms Pro, open WPForms → Entries. If the entry is there, the form worked and the problem is the email step. WPForms Lite does not keep entries in your dashboard unless Lite Connect is enabled, so on Lite go straight to step 4.

4. Test whether WordPress can send any email

Request a password reset for a test user. If that email does not arrive either, WordPress cannot send mail and every plugin on the site is affected, not just WPForms. By default WordPress uses the server’s PHP mail function, which many hosts block or limit, and which sends without the SPF and DKIM authentication that Gmail and Outlook expect.

The fix is to send through an authenticated mail service. See how to fix WordPress not sending email, or send WPForms email through SecureSMTP.

WPForms has its own email template setting under WPForms → Settings → Email. If notifications arrive but look broken, switch the template to plain text to rule it out.

5. If the email is sent but never shows up

Then your mail provider filtered it. Follow the guide for yours:

With SecureSMTP, each WPForms notification is DKIM-signed, sent from an authenticated address with the visitor in Reply-To, and listed in your delivery log as delivered or bounced.

Frequently asked questions

Does WPForms Lite send email notifications?

Yes. WPForms Lite sends a notification for each form. What Lite lacks is extra notifications and conditional logic. It also does not store entries in your dashboard unless you turned on Lite Connect, so check your mailbox and the steps below.

Why does WPForms warn about the From Email address?

WPForms shows a warning when the From Email is not on your site’s domain, because mail servers treat that as a possible forgery. Change it to an address on your own domain.

Do I have to use WP Mail SMTP with WPForms?

No. WPForms sends through WordPress’s wp_mail() function, so any service that handles wp_mail() works, including SecureSMTP.

WPForms emails go to spam. What should I change first?

Make sure the From Email is on your own domain and that the email is sent through a service that passes SPF and DKIM for that domain. Those two changes fix most WPForms spam-folder problems.
